Why is the Explore tool not showing a full year of results?

The Explore tool is designed for broad award discovery, but it works differently from Search. If you’re only seeing a few routes, dates, or airlines, there are a few common reasons why.

1. Explore prioritizes direct flights

Explore is primarily optimized around nonstop/direct routes for the selected airline or program.

It may not include:

  • many connecting itineraries
  • complex routings
  • or partner-operated flights

If an airline has limited nonstop service in the region you’re searching, results may naturally appear limited.

2. The timeline reflects actual availability

The timeline is based on real award availability, not a fixed calendar range.

If award seats only exist on a handful of dates, Explore will only show those dates.

This is especially common for:

  • premium cabins
  • peak travel periods
  • and multi-passenger searches

Searching for 4 business-class seats may produce dramatically fewer results than searching for 1 seat.

3. Search and Explore behave differently

Explore is optimized for:

  • fast discovery
  • scanning broad availability
  • and route exploration

Search is optimized for:

  • exact route/date searches
  • more detailed filtering
  • and specific itinerary hunting

A route that does not appear in Explore may still appear in Search.

4. Some routes or shorter flights may be filtered

To keep Explore usable, certain:

  • very short-haul routes
  • highly repetitive routes
  • or dense regional flights

may be filtered or deprioritized contextually.

5. Partner and airline-program differences

Even when airlines are partners or alliance members:

  • availability may differ by program
  • some flights may only appear on the operating airline
  • or certain inventory may only be visible to logged-in members, elite users, or co-branded cardholders

Additionally, some partner-operated flights may not appear in Explore unless searching the operating airline directly.

6. Cached vs live availability

Award availability changes constantly.

In some cases:

  • cached results may temporarily differ from live airline availability
  • flights may disappear quickly
  • or pricing may change between searches

Need broader results?

Try:

  • using Search instead of Explore
  • reducing passenger count
  • expanding date ranges
  • searching nearby airports
  • allowing connecting itineraries
  • enabling “Show all dynamic results”
  • searching a different airline or loyalty program

Still think something is wrong?

Please include:

  • route
  • dates
  • passenger count
  • cabin
  • airline/program
  • screenshots
  • whether you were using Search or Explore
  • and where you saw alternate availability

That helps us determine whether the issue is:

  • routing limitations
  • partner-program differences
  • dynamic pricing
  • cached/stale data
  • or a real bug.
